I'm going to start off by saying already that I definitely know I went over on all of these designs considering concept, layout, and corrections. Making a budget/getting things approved is a lot of time when it's all added up!
With this stress poster, I began with completely different pictures. I started out with a very plain design, but struggle coming up with a way to make the design capture the viewer and yet not be too simple or too overpowering. My first designs were definitely overpowering, so I simplified the design and added in dominate colors that would capture the viewers eye while flipping through a magazine. After figuring in the concept. layout, and adding in all the numerous corrections I had to make I would say this project took me about 13+ hours. Finally got the "OK"! If I were to recreate this design I would probably make it more colorful and playful. Something that would jump off the page at the reader. I learned in the assignment how much of a struggle it is to deal with so much text in such a small work document. I struggle making the piece appealing because of the lack of space.
Oh, Native American Heritage Month....I definitely had my go arounds with this project. I stayed with the same layout throughout this whole assignment. I changed my concept throughout the critiques, because the first one was as meaningful. My biggest challenge with these posters were finding photos to fit the resolution I wanted and take up the spacing I was needing without pixilating. I found numerous photos, but a lot of them didn't fit the composition I was needing or were cut down too far and wouldn't layout on my poster correctly. Filling in the negative space was also a huge challenge I came upon. I fixed this by enlarging all my text and aligning it differently. I learned from this project the importance of having a concept that can be carried throughout a series. Even, though, I just changed photos throughout the designs, it was a challenge to find photos that linked with one another and had a continuing appearance. This project took me forever! Struggling to find photos was the most consuming part. All around I would say I spent about 9.5hours on this series. :( went way over.
The next two food designs are separate designs, but I am going to talk about them in the same paragraph.
The first one was a challege, because we had to manage to find a way to shove all the information into such a small layout. The sidebar was a scary task for me and was super nervous to figure out how I was going to stick it into the design on top of all the other text too. I decided to use the picture of the pills so that I could carry out the imagery into the other page by using the pills on that page as well. I wanted to stick the the two colors, blue and orange, inorder to have a continues color scheme in the layout. I started the box on the right side of the layout, but was suggested to move it, and I agree, because adjusting it made the layout more visually appealing and gave me more space to to work with. I oversized the title hoping it make the reader stop on the article, because the title caught their eye. I tried putting myself in the shoes of the reader and thought about what caught my attention when looking through a magazine, and what it came down to was bright colors or oversized objects/images. I really learned from this project how to work with too much text in a small layout. On this project I was actually close to making time. I knew what I wanted to do, but it took me awhile to get everything just right, therefore, I spent about 5hours on this layout. I actually made my budget!
On to the next one. The How Safe layout actually didn't take me as long. This was definitely a struggle, though. Compared to the previous layout it was hard having to fill the space using such little given text. I decided to use a full image on one page, because I knew it would for sure take up space and then just leave the other page for the text. In order to utilize the space on the one page, I enlarged my text and made certain parts of the text stand out more that the others. It was hard to make it visually interesting and not overpower the text with the intro paragraph, but to capture the readers eye, I made the title oversized and put the text into two even columns. I also used bright colors in this layout as well so that the readers eye would be drawn to it. On this project I would say I made budget again, giving the amount of text to work with. I'd estimate about 4.75 hours on this design.
This jazz poster, was one of the first projects we were allowed to use color on. I decided to use yellow, because jazz is a very classy and flamboyant known genre, and when I think jazz I think of New Orleans were bright colors are used everywhere. We had to use a silhouette of something, so I chose to use this singer because she utilized the spacing of the page and her expressions expressed the feel of jazz. I struggled with my illustration on this layout, but worked on it to make it better. The microphone was the hardest to render and make look decent. I feel the eye flows down the poster the way it should to the reader. It was challenging to make the poster stand out without being overpowering and that is one thing I learned when creating this poster. The illustration took me the longest on this project. I would say in total the whole design took me 8hours. If I were able to redo this I would probably change my illustration and make it more appealing and add more variation of color to it.
